True stories can be told in very few words, Ernest Hemingway said (“For sale: Baby shoes, never worn”). Life, lives, in ads: Deutschland in Kleinanzeigen (Germany in Small Ads) by Martina Schulte (Germany) is a portrait of a society reflected by what there is for sale: Toys reflecting a boy’s longing for a girlfriend, an atlas telling the story of a broken youth; tiny tales of loneliness and longing for life. A thrilling idea, maybe somewhat chaotic, even superficial every now and then, but doubtlessly daring, touching, a piece throwing flashlights on a hidden universe.
