I should have been quicker on the upshot in telling you about this, but….
France is finally waking up to the existence- and perhaps the plight- of the radio documentary.

There are all sorts of little groups and courses and movements springing up

One of the most recent- and most energetic is Addor: “association pour le dévéloppement du documentaire radiophonique”.

Friends of Radio Diaries,

We hope you can tune in this Friday to hear our latest project,
Willie McGee and the Traveling Electric Chair.

The documentary follows Bridgette McGee’s searchto find out everything she can about her grandfather’s life – and his death.

On NPR’s All Things Considered Friday May 7th at 430pm (EST)
Visit radiodiaries.org for photos, extra audio clips, and to hear the full documentary.
Our project has just been featured in the New York Times.

On the night of May 7th, 1951 close to a thousand people gathered

around the courthouse in the small town of Laurel, Mississippi.

They had come to witness the execution of Willie McGee, a young

black man arrested for raping a white woman. Mississippi’s traveling

electric chair was set up inside the courthouse. Outside, a local radio

station broadcast the event live.

The case of Willie McGee lasted 6 years, went through three trials,

received support from William Faulkner, Paul Robeson, and Albert

Einstein, and was covered in newspapers around the country… and

the world. But after the execution, the story of Willie McGee was

largely forgotten.

Willie McGee and the Traveling Electric Chair follows a granddaughter’s

search for the truth about a case that has been called a real-life To Kill

A Mockingbird. The documentary also includes a newly discovered recording

from the night of the execution, which will be broadcast for the first time

since 1951.

Narrated by Bridgette McGee Robinson

Producers: Joe Richman and Samara Freemark

Associate Producer: Anayansi Diaz-Cortes

Consulting Editors: Deborah George, Ben Shapiro
