09 ‘Sewer Festival’ in Utrecht (NL), PRESS RELEASE

What every city desires!
During this four day event the city of Utrecht will be richer for hosting the historical horrors of the year 1600, a modern day zoo with fairy tales, the Tour de France, a sea port to the world and a subway network including subway stations.
NOTE: The ‘SewerFest [030]’ forms part of ‘Europa Cantat’
a 10 day festival in Utrecht for singers and choirs from all over the world. [17 to 26 July]
The sounds project ‘SewerFest[030]’ may be experienced in many different ways. “Firstly, the shopping public will be taken by surprise when they hear sounds emerging from the pavement. Or you could pause to listen around one of the many sump grates”, says the organising Sewer Team of the Stichting rioolFest (a society) in Hilversum.
Initiator Willem Davids explains “The idea is as simple as it is unique. The sound source, the heart of the festival, is a purpose-built speaker assembly that is placed in the main storm water drain pipe. Sounds in this pipe must travel their way out of the storm water system by rising to all connected sump grates at street level. The grates act as sound speakers through the open surface water system.”
The Stichting rioolFest travels the world to improve the bad image sewers endure. “It’s a great success”, says Davids,” I started out in Hilversum, we’ll switch on in Canada next year, the sewer world around the globe will be spinning on its head”
