NEGATIVLANDFamous and infamous for their musical mash-ups and pointed social commentaries, Negativland has been experimenting with found sound, pop music and humor since back in the early eighties. They’ve produced cds, books, fine art, videos and a weekly live program on KPFA, Berkeley. This week we bring you two quintessential examples of their work, PLUS a rare NPR interview from 1988 when Negativland revealed a media hoax to the listeners of All Things Considered.

Come out to hear Negativland live:

Negativland will perform “It’s All in Your Head FM” as part of the Third Coast Festival’s Fall Flurry of public events in Chicago. Tickets are now available for this program and all the other great audio events we’ve got coming up:

Alain Trutat, deceased on August 21, at the 84 years age

ALAIN TRUTATAlain Trutat was a man of few words.
Eyes half closed, a smile lingering on his lips, he would seem not to have heard what one said, as though lost in some other space of his own.
And then would come a reply, slightly out of sync .
Often just one phrase, laconic, sibylline.
Often extremely funny.
Striking at the epicentre of what one had been trying to say .He began his radio career as a drama producer (réalisateur).
Throughout his life he remainded the friend and ally of writers, particulary those who « wrote for radio » (Beckett, Marguerite Duras, Nathalie Sarraute, Georges Perec).
And all of us (aspiring documentarians) who wanted to «write in sound»… without really knowing how to do so.

One of the famous 68 slogans has to do with taking one’s dreams for realities.

Following May 68, Alain Trutat founded France-Culture’s Atelier de Création radiophonique, a cell for the production of new acoustic – and particulary radiophonic-forms and languages .
New ways of hearing the world, new ways of writing, painting sculpting in sound, new ways of apprehending reality.
No subject was too complex or too simple, too elitist or too banal.
Anything, everything could be written in sound.
Provided that the syntax were correct, the language subtle, the colours true, the form appropriate to the medium of radio.
Radio of which he often spoke in terms of transparency, musicality, silence and rigour.
Radio, which Alain Trutat considered -and wished to be considered by others- as one of the fine arts.

I first met Alain Trutat when I was making a program about Alfred Jarry, inventor of pataphysics, an imaginary science which has to do with finding «imaginary solutions for real problems».
Alain Trutat was, in fact, a true pataphysician.

Jury PresidentVenice, 29 September 2006May I start by presenting the Radio Documentary jury to you.
There were seven members of the jury:
Lisa Herbert from CBC (Canada), Hynek Pekarek from CR (Czech Republic), Idalberto Fei from RAI (Italy), Hwang Jong-Hyun from MBC (South Korea), Lars-Helge Myklebust from NRK (Norway), Tana Kusa from SR (Slovak Republic) and I am Lorelei Harris from RTE (Ireland).

An eighth member of jury, Marco Horat from Switzerland, was excluded as he arrived late and felt unable to catch up with the number of programmes the jury had already heard.

There were 35 entries in the Radio Documentary competition.
Of these, the jury excluded one entry, from Romanian Radio, on the basis that it was a radio drama and did not therefore conform to the criteria of the radio documentary competition.
