Thanks to everyone who’s made it possible (I assume that means you, Willem)!
As you may see from the attached I don’t have a swimsuit like Robyn but I prefer to dress with a rugged look.

(Anna Sekudewicz)

Introduction
I would like to start with a few general remarks on the state of investigative journalism in Poland in the times of great political, economical as well as geographical changes.
In fact lately, investigative journalism in Poland has developed and gained an important position in our everyday life.
It`s often said in Poland nowdays that sometimes it`s enough for a famous investigative journalist to make a phoncall to a politician to make him hand in his resignation.
And it`s not in the least a joke. That means the end of his career.

We have called our presentaion, our workshop „digging for dirt”. Which doesen`t seem very inviting but that`s life
Anyway thanks to this journalistic „digging for dirt” our society has realised how much dirt there is arround us. Moreover people discovered how important the job of a journalist is for the state on the whole, for our democracy.
And ofen they weren`t aware of it till now.

If the biggest scandals and affairs haden`t been revealed we would still have had , for instance, poor healthcare law. The electronic media controlled by the state and consequently a lot of mess in the media law, or for example corruption within the headquaters of the National Police.
In fact in our country very often media play the role of judiciary system.
And there is another remark. It seems that „digging for dirt” has amazingly improved Polish journalism itself and even it induced more ethical attitudes not only among reporters, but also publishers and authorities in radio and TV . Not everywhere of course, but let`s look on the bright side.

It`s a well-known phenomenon that credibility and and social trust of media has incereased up to 80%- 90% recently. Politicians have 3%-4%.
The Polish Public Radio and the daily paper Rzeczpospolita are the most trustful ones according to the public research.
And there`s final important question: Can Polish investigative journalists be satisfad with the results of their work ? I`m afraid I must say Yes and No.
No because the scandals revealed by us are seldom tried at court. Not a single high- rank civil servant has been convicted so far.
And yes because the advantage`s is that all of us observe changes in the mentality of Polish people who are getting more conscious, more critical and more independent than they used to be. Thanks to this „new art.”- investigative journalism, more facts are discussed publicly.

We hope that in the consequence we will observe deep changes in the whole public life. We believe that it`s possible.
More particulary, as media hasn`t been such a strong real fourth power so far in our country since 1989.
The Polish broadskeet newspaper Rzeczpospolita( Republic) plays the main part in the inveastigative journalism. Rzeczpospolita is an all-Poland newspaper, one of the biggest in our country. Over1.2 mln people read it everyday.

Andrzej Stankiewicz investigative journalist from Rzeczpospolita ( Polish Pulitzer for the most outstanding media investigative material in 2003) and Hanna Bogoryja –Zakrzewska and Ernest Zozu_ from Polish Radio ( Grand Press 2002 for investigative feature) will present now „how they did it” .

MediaMind contributes to an attitude of informed and critical understanding of the nature, technique and impact of radioand television as well as the ability to produce media items.

The average amount of time watching TV by young people takes 1 1/2 hour per day. Chatting, surfing and playing games on the computer lasts half an hour every day for the same group of adolescents between 15 and 19 years.
More then other groups in society young people live in a culture dominated by audiovisual influences which asks new skills and competences: visual literacy.

Participating in MediaMind students recieve lessons on the construction of the massmedia, they write a critical review on a tv-program and experience the making of their own interview, clip or commentary on the yearly Day of the Media. (December 2004)
